Countable and Uncountable Nouns

الأسماء القابلة للعد والأسماء الغير قابلة للعد 

 هناك أسماء يمكن عدها أي أخذ عدد منها , ككتاب وكتب , ولد و أولاد. وتدعى هذه الأسماء أسماء قابلة للعدّ أي Countable Nouns

 أن نعرف الصفات الكمية والعددية Adjectives of Quantity and Number وهي:

Many, much, (a) few, little, some, any, a lot

التي يتوجب استعمالها مع هذه الأسماء.

الصفات الكمية والعددية

تقسم إلى ثلاثة أقسام:

1- الصفات العددية والمستعملة مع الأسماء القابلة للعد منها:

A, an, many, two, three

2- الصفات الكمية والمستعملة مع الأسماء غير القابلة للعد منها:

much, (a) little

3- الصفات الكمية والعددية المشتركة والتي تستعمل مع الأسماء القابلة للعد وغير القابلة للعد منها:

Some, any, plenty , a lot

وهذا الجدول يوضح لنا الصفات الكمية والعددية الواجب استعمالها مع الأسماء

  مشتركة مع الأسماء القابلة للعد والغير قابلة للعد Countable and Uncountableمع الأسماء غير القابلة للعد Uncountableمع الأسماء القابلة للعد CountableSomeعدد أو كمية صغيرة)a)littleكمية قليلةa few عدد قليلanya, anواحدplentyعدد أو كمية كبيرةmuchكمية كبيرةtwo, three,etc.اثنان ثلاثة الخ.a lotmanyعدد كبير

مع الأسماء القابلة للعد نستعمل: a few عدد قليل, many عدد كبير , a, an (واحد). لنأخذ أمثلة:

There are a few boys in the classroom

Hani has a nice dog

Fadia bought two dresses today

Hala and Muna have many friends

She has an egg for breakfast every morning

مع الأسماء الغير قابلة للعد نستعمل : much كمية كبيرة, a little كمية صغيرة مثال ذلك:

I have a little money in the bank

للامتحان   How much time is left for the examination?

Nadim has little knowledge of English

These girls haven’t much time for study at the week-ends

أما الصفات العددية والكمية المشتركة التي تستعمل مع الأسماء قاطبةً سواء كانت هذه قابلة للعد أو غير قابلة للعد هي: Some, any, a lot, plenty. أما some فيكون استعمالها في الجمل المثبتة Affirmative , بينما any تستعمل في الجمل المنفية negative والاستفهامية interrogative فتقول:

 The teacher has some work to do _______________________uncountable

He has some books to correct __________________________countable

Can you find any mistakes in this letter?__________________ countable

Maha cannot find any money to buy this expensive dress_____uncountable

There are a lot of good ideas in your composition____________countable

He put a lot of chalk in the box __________________________uncountable

You have plenty of time to make up your mind _____________uncountable

Majed has plenty of pencils in his bag _____________________countable

I haven’t any books on my desk___________________________countable       /not any= no

I have no books on my desk

There isn’t any butter on the dish__________________________uncountable

Or: There is no butter on the dish

وجدير بالذكر بأننا نستعمل عند التخاطب a lot في الجمل المثبتة affirmative, أما في الجمل المنفية والاستفهامية negative and interrogative فيغلب استعمال many  و much فتقول:

There is a lot of work to do here ___________________________مثبتة affirmative

There isn’t much work to do here_____________________________منفية negative

There are a lot of broken pieces of glass on the floor___________________________مثبتة affirmative

There aren’t many pieces of broken glass on the floor____________________________ منفية negative

Is there much to do here?_____________ سؤال interrogative = question

Are there many pieces of chalk on the floor?_____________ سؤال interrogative = question
